Our Story
2010 – 2022
Our beloved Beatrix (affectionally known as Trixie) came from a well-known breeder who has tremendous knowledge of cats. We collected her in December 2010; the breeder went through all the paperwork and gave us some tips on feline care. We were given a few kilos of frozen minced raw rabbit and bone to take away.
It never occurred to us that we should have asked the breeder why she was feeding all her cats and kittens on a diet of raw meat and bone. Once Trixie had finished all her raw minced rabbit and bone, she was converted onto commercial cat food without any further thought
Not long after, her stools were soft and had far more odour. Tiffany (the other cat in the household) was the same. If the breeder had explained the benefits of this regime we would probably have done the research and stuck to the raw diet. Suddenly we realised that if Trixie’s stools had changed and she was lethargic, it was due to a dietary change.
This led us to do lots of online research about raw feeding for felines. I found a supplier for minced meat and bone diet and placed an order straight away. Both Tiffany and Trixie were gradually converted back onto a raw food diet. After a few weeks I noticed that their stools were smaller and odourless. Interestingly, the raw meat and bone diet can be fed in smaller portions than commercial food. Raw food is predominantly protein, which cats thrive on - they utilise more of the food matter, so less is rejected in the faeces.
The main problem for the human (that's me!) was that the cats’ food could only be purchased in a frozen 1kg block, as if it was for the lion enclosure at a zoo. It had to be sawed into three pieces to make sure that the meat was not sitting in the fridge for too long!
PURRFORM IS BORN
After a year of sawing I had had enough and whilst on holiday the business idea came to mind. Why not make frozen raw meat and bone food for cats in 70g pouches for easy storage and serving? Purrform was born!
We adore our cats. In the last decade we have expanded our knowledge and read extensively about these fascinating animals, particularly their nutritional requirements. Above all, as a human being who made the decision to have cats as pets, we have learnt to respect them and treat them in the best possible way. In the wild they’d eat freshly-killed prey. They would eat the whole animal, meat, bone, fur and all!
As an owner of cats, I believe we all have the responsibility to give them an appropriate diet, as close as possible to what they would eat in the wild. We are strong advocates of the raw food diet, not because it is a trend, but because this is how a cat should be fed.
It is their natural diet and doesn’t contain grains, soya, additives or preservatives. It can help to prevent many of the common cat conditions, such as diabetes, kidney disease, IBD & UTIs.
There is a lot of education needed for pet owners regarding raw food diets. Cats are obligate carnivores and require a diet rich in animal protein to sustain a healthy lifestyle. Giving them an omnivorous diet (required by humans) leads to all sorts of health problems.
Purrform is trying to remain as close to nature as possible by producing food with no additives, preservatives or any palatant enhancements.
All minced recipes are grain-free and made with human-grade meat. We never use scraps or animal by products. Purrform pure and natural raw diet is a complete cat food and there’s no need for any dry additions.
Although Purrform has grown in size since the early days, we are still a fairly small, family-run business. Our love of cats and our desire to give them the best possible life shines through!
I hope my story will inspire you to do your own research and see why this is the best diet for your cat’s wellbeing.
Try Purrform cat food and watch your cat glow with health. You will also benefit from the ease and the convenience of smaller portion sizes… definitely no sawing required!
